SHREK 2
This movie picks up right where "Shrek" left off, kind of like Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill, Volume 2", but that's about the only similarity between the two. After the wildly-successful "Shrek," I approached the sequel with trepidation; I mean, would disappointingly rehash the first one, or come up with a new angle and lose the sense of discovery, humor, and cultural references that made the original so great? It couldn't actually be as GOOD as the first one, could it? Despite my suspicions, "Shrek 2" is a zippy roller-coaster that energetically launches itself over the dips, turns, and corkscrews of light-hearted summer comedy. Like the first, there are things best left unquestioned, like that whole Donkey/Dragon relationship (that STILL really bothers me), but if you can forgive a bit of shake and wobble from your carnival rides (as your theater seat is unlikely to catapult you headlong over the tilt-a-whirl into the cotton-candy booth in a tragic festival accident, even metaphorically) then "Shrek 2" is gleeful summer-escapist fare. Maybe in a couple decades somber film students will write theses on how Joseph Campbell would interpret the sinister archetypes in "Shrek 9: Donkey's Revenge," but for now the series is quick and charming, and worth a visit. If nothing else, you can try to identify the plethora of TV/movie references (a activity as engaging in this movie as it is annoying in a Quentin Tarantino flick).
If you liked the movies below, you'll probably like this one (and vice versa):
