HOLES
Someone was asking me the other day, "Why don't you review movies you like?" Well, here's one. If you look for the book "Holes" in the public library, you'll find it in the "Juvenile Fiction" section. This is mostly because the main characters are teenagers, not adults, but this doesn't mean that it's a childish story. It's a pretty good yarn about a wrongly-imprisoned youth, a multi-generational curse, and redemption. Louis Sachar, the author, understands that one doesn't have to write DOWN to children and teenagers. The result is a story that can be enjoyed by anyone who was ever a teenager.
The second great part of this is that Louis Sachar also wrote the screenplay, a rare moment of intelligence in the Hollywood system. Very little changes in the move to the big screen; no added car chases, explosions, or gratuitous nudity. Sure, you lose some of the insight to the main character's inner dialog, but you gain the visuals of the desert and the interconnected stories of multiple generations. If you find "Harry Potter" a touch too twee for your tastes, you may enjoy the more realistic "Holes", sort of a youthful "Cool Hand Luke" with a happy ending. Check it out.
If you liked the movies below, you'll probably like this one (and visa versa):
