Web Log Entry #0050, Sunday, March 9, 2003: Day 111
Anchorage Sunrise: 7:37am Sunset: 6:44pm High Temp: 35° Low Temp: 13° This was a very quiet week. It took me until Wednesday to feel like I was catching up on sleep after my Portland trip, so I barely had strength to make it to the grocery store, let alone do anything interesting. The days are pleasantly longer, but temperatures are still low. Today was sunny and bright, and I went on a shopping trip. Coming out of Costco, I walked into a dust storm. Unlike much of Alaska, Anchorage has predominately paved roads. However, the tons of gravel poured on them over the winter translates into plenty of dust come "break up" (A local term for spring thaw, referring to the local custom of couples going their separate ways after eight months of shared cabin fever*). For some reason, today was the day for a huge wind storm, and that dust went along for the ride. I retreated to the relative safety of the condo. The building shook. Shingles blew off. I was so glad that I didn't have to be out in it, I had some ice cream. * Okay, I know that's not where it comes from, I was just seeing if you're paying attention.
