THE CORE

Science and Hollywood have an uneasy relationship. On one hand, Science, particularly scientific experiments gone horribly wrong, figures prominently in many movies. On the other hand, scientists are routinely depicted with a heavy use of stereotypes that no other minority group would tolerate. A scientist character is lucky if he's only "quirky." On the third hand, "The Core" kindly shows scientists as predominately normal, ordinary people who just happen to have a passion for and knowledge of science.

Be aware that if YOU have a knowledge of science, you WILL find fault with this movie. Great liberties with physics are taken (laws of heat, pressure, motion, etc. are cheerfully broken). I won't detail them here, because this film rewards those who can overlook the inaccurate. Despite these errors, it's a rippin' good yarn. Essentially, a hastily-assembled team must journey to the center of the Earth to save Humanity; kind of an underground "Armageddon." There's danger, heroism, humor, and plenty of action. And since every great scientific expedition requires female representation (although today's trend is empowered women, not just someone who constantly needs to be rescued), Hilary Swank plays a NASA shuttle pilot, Major Childs (I kept waiting for someone to refer to her as "Major Babe," but the studio execs must have decided that wasn't PC enough).

Flagrant disregard of science can really ruin a movie for me, but "The Core" pays off nicely for those who can suspend their disbelief at the door. Check it out.

If you liked the movies below, you'll probably like this one (and vice versa):

  • Armageddon
  • Independence Day
