Evan's Eyes

200 CIGARETTES

I am SO not part of this movie's target audience! I may be a divorced forty-something guy from a small Arizona town, but I thought there would be universal themes presented in this film to which I could relate. I was wrong. This movie seems aimed squarely at disaffected twenty-somethings in the New York metropolitan area whose sole fascinations are mating and whining. These two things are what this movie is all about. Sure, they may dress up the mating urge as looking for a "relationship," and the whining as talking about "feelings," but don't be fooled. You'll love this film if the two following statements STRONGLY describe you:
  • I worship all that is New York;
  • The three things I love most are mating, whining, and whining while mating.
The panoply of young performers and scattered gems in the dialog may interest non-whining-mating-and-New-York-obsessed people, but your enjoyment is likely inversely proportional to your desire to club whiny, self-obsessed New Yorkers into unconsciousness. And since it's New York, the characters are constantly drinking, smoking, and swearing (about half as much as a Quentin Tarantino movie, so rather a lot). If this sounds totally unappealing, try "Grand Canyon" instead.

If you liked the movies below, you'll probably like this one (and vice versa):

  • Singles
  • Drinking Games
  • Bodies, Rest and Motion
  • High Fidelity
