Brotherhood of the Wolf
The question most people ask about this movie is "How does this compare to other French kung-fu werewolf movies set in the Period of Enlightenment?" I can confidently say that this is easily the best I've seen this year, but the Treaty of Versailles limits the number allowed into the US annually, so I can't speak for ALL of them.
Cross-genre films like this are difficult to review. To start off, it's a foreign film, which is a major flaw, except for the interesting cinematography. However, it has lots more hitting, kicking, nudity and explosions than most foreign films (well, European ones, anyway), so what standard do we judge it by? It doesn't have enough fight scenes to qualify as a good martial-arts movie. There's a LOT of talking, which bloats the running time to well over two hours. And, not to give anything away, it's technically not a werewolf movie. This is actually a mystery movie with a hard-hitting French gardener/taxidermist protagonist. For a hard-hitting French gardener/taxidermist mystery movie set in the Period of Enlightenment, it's about average.
If you liked the movies below, you'll probably like this one (and visa versa):
