BANDITS
I'm not just recommending this movie because it was partly filmed in Oregon and I want it to do well so more movies will be shot there. That's only about half my motivation. I suspect people who gave this a miss when it was in the theaters did so because it sounds odd on paper. First of all: Bruce Willis and Billy Bob Thorton. Doesn't that just seem strange? Like pairing Arnold Schwartzenegger and Danny DeVito, or Bill Macy and Hank Azaria. Yet "Twins" and "Mystery Men" use those very pairings, and are fun movies. I'll admit, "Bandits" is quirky. Billy Bob's character is a neurotic psychosomatic, hardly fit material for bank robbery. Bruce Willis's character is a smugly arrogant ladies man, who knows the lyrics to the über-sappy "Total Eclipse of the Heart." Mix well with a depressed yuppie housewife and a wanna-be stuntman who sets himself on fire to impress women, and you've got an oddball cocktail ready to implode. This could be the cinematic equivalent of chocolate-covered chicken. Those with simple tastes aren't going to like the mix, but the more adventurous may delight in the unusual qualities. Check it out. Buy Oregon!
If you liked the movies below, you'll probably like this one (and visa versa):
